Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths (STEM)

This Faculty is made up all three sciences, Maths and Further Maths. The Faculty Principal is Amanda Woodward.

As part of Science month, Y7 pupils spent today in the STEM faculty, learning about speed.

We had lots of fun with Sumo suits and CO2 powered cars and we thought about potential careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

A video of the Co2 powered cars can be found here

On Wednesday 1st February, Y8 pupils spent their school day in the STEM faculty.
The focus of their day was “Speed”.
In PE, with Barbara, pupils used sumo wrestling suits to study the idea of streamlining. They carried out assault courses and calculated their speed with and without their sumo suits

In Science, with Gary, the pupils carried out a circus of Physics experiments and learned several ways to measure speed.

In Computing, with Graham, pupils programmed their own countdown starter.

In maths, with Pervinder, the students designed and made cars able to hold CO2 canisters for propulsion.

In DT, with Simon and Charlie, the students fired their cars’ CO2 Canisters. The cars travelled from one side of the theatre to the other in half a second.

At the end of the day, pupils gathered together to think about STEM careers. Have they ever considered the variety of careers available in the STEM subjects? Have they ever thought these were out of reach? They really aren’t! Our pupils were inspired to find out more about STEM careers.
Pupils interested in finding out more can:
1. Speak to their STEM teacher
2. Speak to the STEM Head of Department
3. Speak to Amanda Woodward (STEM Faculty Principal)
4. Speak with Mary La Spisa (Careers)
