English

Every student here studies English for at least five years and every student will need some sort of qualification in English when they leave school, therefore English is obviously a key subject..
We are fortunate to be strongly staffed by a team of eleven experienced specialist teachers, several of whom have other senior responsibilities within the school. We operate in a suite of teaching rooms together with a purpose built English office.
We want students to read, write, talk and listen with skill, confidence and enjoyment, all of our teaching is directed towards this aim. We want young people to look forward to English lessons, to love reading, to be passionate about issues, to be strongly creative in their writing. But the teaching of English is concerned not only with the development of skills but also with the growth of the whole person; we see the fostering of good relationships between teacher and student as very important.
We encourage enrichment activities at all levels. Some examples include:
• A creative writing club run by a professional author which produces a book each year
• Participation in the national Magistrates Mock Trial competition where students try a case in a real court room
• The best year 7 spellers form a team for the Sunday Times National Spelling Bee
• Visits by theatre companies to perform plays, including Shakespeare
• Field trips for 6th form English Language students to the Public Record Office and to nurseries and schools to study language use in different contexts.
• Evening theatre trips
A key statement from the recent Children's Act says: 'Enjoy and achieve' and that is exactly our philosophy.
