ICT

The importance of ICT in today's society is reflected in the key messages from the Government's education strategy and in the National Curriculum framework. It is therefore essential that our students develop a good understanding of ICT and can apply their knowledge to a wide range of problems and situations.

Trinity is committed to providing students with the highest possible quality of education that meets their individual needs, equips them for lifelong learning and with the capability to succeed in a rapidly changing world.

Information Technology aims

The Department aims to:

  • use ICT to facilitate, enhance, enrich and extend learning.
  • provide a curriculum which meets the needs of all our pupils.
  • make innovative use of leading-edge technology, and provide state-of-the art facilities for every student and teacher.
  • encourage students to critically evaluate their work and to understand the importance of the appropriate use of ICT.
  • develop confident ICT users.
  • increase students' motivation and self-esteem by using ICT to remove the barriers that affect their attitudes to learning as a whole.
  • use ICT to provide a non-threatening and supportive environment which allows students to achieve success.
  • use ICT, as appropriate, to improve the learning experience of students with special educational needs.
  • provide support for other departments and help them to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in ICT.

Curriculum Objectives

The ICT curriculum will:
  • be delivered through discrete ICT lessons and cross-curricular activities.
  • enhance creativity and communication.
  • promote the use of digital applications for achieving a goal, rather than for their own sake.
  • equip students with some of the skills that they will need in the workplace or in further education or training.
  • develop project management and problem solving skills.
  • increase creativity and develop real-world, practical skills that will motivate learning across a wide range of subjects.

Curriculum

Overview

Our policy is to encourage the appropriate use of ICT throughout the curriculum. To achieve this, every Department strives to develop programmes of study which include the use of ICT. Heads of Department are encouraged to liaise with the Head of ICT who can assist with the development of cross-curricular ICT links in their programmes of study.

To further develop and consolidate their skills, knowledge and understanding of ICT, students and Staff are actively encouraged to make use of the ICT facilities during non-contact time.

ICT is a core subject and as such it is mandatory at Key Stages 3 and 4.

Key Stage 3

In year 7 pupils study ICT for 2 periods each fortnight and 3 in years 8 and 9.
The Key Stage 3 ICT programme of study addresses the National Strategy Framework objectives; predominately through cross-curricular projects and the assessment of each unit is carried out using a standard departmental system that considers the level of the students work and awards an overall attainment level with all aspects of this system recorded on-line.
A web site to support students in their Key Stage 3 studies is available on line. Please refer to our Trinity ICT VLE
 - This is a secure site and you will require the password from an I.C.T. teacher.

In addition to this some pupils study a creative iMedia course in years 8 and 9

Key Stage 4

Pupils can opt to gain OCR National qualifications in ICT. The course's flexibility allows some students to complete multiple awards. Those who do not study ICT as an option qualification follow a basic skill curriculum which enables them to develop their ICT abilities in different areas.

Key Stage 5

We offer both the WJEC Advanced Level and Creative iMedia (Level 3) courses at KS5.

Assessment and Reporting

Key Stage 3

Subject teachers are required to assess each unit of work and award a final national curriculum attainment level. All assessment materials are available on-line and each subject teacher is responsible for maintaining an up to date records of the progress and attainment of their classes. Annual reports comment on students' ICT capability throughout KS3 and the overall level of each student's ICT capability is reported to parents at the end of Key Stage 3.

Key Stage 4-5

Course tutors are responsible for assessing, monitoring and recording students' progress. The HoD is responsible for ensuring that all staff are confident in using the Board's marking criteria and ample support is in place to assist with the process of assessment and monitoring.

Students following the 'A' level ICT programme will be assessed against course criteria. At the end of year 12, tutors are responsible for reporting student achievements to the Head of ICT.

In addition, all students are encouraged to access their own progress and set personal targets.
